I am a musician with an Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hon BFA), majoring in Classical Voice from York University. I can teach you how to warm up the voice and other vocal techniques, and I can teach beginner guitar technique. I have a good knowledge of theory, which I can pass on to you as well. Harmonica is another instrument I can teach the basics for.
Hon. BFA, York University - 2000
Private voice instruction by Dyanne Dumas, Miriam Khalil
Independent guitar study - ongoing
Also learning: bass guitar, drums
I have been teaching in my home since 2013 and wish to continue teaching online and in-person once the pandemic is over. I have taught adults, teens and children from about 9 years of age.
For voice, I use the methods I learned while in university. First, a body and vocal warm-up with various exercises, then the study of a vocal piece, according to the level of the student. One method I found helpful was the VACCAI Practical Method of Italian Singing. Before the words are sung, it is helpful to sing vowels for the notes.
For guitar, a physical stretch begins the lesson, then the use of scales or chromatic notes up and down the fretboard to warm up the hands and fingers. I then introduce chords. Then a study of a piece that is suitable to the level of the student is done. The Hal Leonard method is something I refer to for teaching purposes.
I am flexible as to the schedule of the student.
For the time being, Skype lessons would be more suitable. When the pandemic is over, I am free in my home, or I can travel to a student's home within a reasonable distance.
