I am a French native speaker with some tutoring experience in mathematics and English. I am currently doing a Bachelor at Sciences Po (one of the French “Grandes Écoles”), in Paris. I am in Vancouver from September 2022 to April 2023 for an exchange year at the University of British Columbia.

Education / Certificates

I did my school and my high-school in France, in a public establishment. I obtained my French high school diploma (the “Baccalauréat”) with an average grade of 18.50/20, in a scientist channel (mathematics, physical, chemistry and biology). I obtained 16/20 on the French oral literature exam and 17/20 on the French writing literature exam. During my last year of high-school, I applied for Sciences Po as 20 000 other students. I was finally accepted with around 500 other students. Then I started to study human and social sciences with a bit of mathematics all the same. After my third year of Bachelor which will be carried out in Vancouver, I will be able to apply for a Master at my home school, Sciences Po.

Until the end of my high-school, all my courses were in French excepted the languages ones. During the past two academic years, I have chosen to follow some courses in English (for about one third of my total courses) in addition to the basic languages ones. That way, I am able to communicate in English with a fluent level, and obviously I totally master the French language, which I have used during a large part of my academic classes and exams.

Professional Experience

My tutoring experience was done during secondary school and high school. Some professors implemented a system of tutoring in which students with the best grades were encouraged to help their classmates with more difficulties, if both wanted to, during specific time slots that were not included in our initial timetables. I personally participated in as a tutor in mathematics and English. This was a truly rewarding experience, regarding how I developed my explanation and patience skills.

Teaching Approach

The way I want to teach can be divided in 3 phases.

The first one consists of a discussion with the client, in order to understand why he decided to be helped, what are the reasons that have pushed him to ask for assistance. That way, I am able to determine on which aspect(s) it is better to focus on: syntax, vocabulary (either it be general or specific to a precise topic), oral expression and its specificities, or others (i.e., a homework, an essay or a dissertation).

The second stage refers to the tutoring classes themselves, and there are two main points about it. During these hours my goal is to help my client to reach its personal objective presented during the first stage. Obviously, depending on how many hours he paid for, I will be more or less meticulous on each point. The organization will obviously not be the same for 5 hours than for 20 hours for a same goal because I cannot spend as much time on each point in 5 than in 20 hours. However, I also attach great significance to debriefing. At the end of each class, I think it is important to discuss with the client, to make him talk about the class he just has had, the positive and negative points he found, the things he wants to do more, the things he is at-ease with so that we can pass more rapidly on them. This is a fundamental component of a good tutoring because it enables the teacher to better adapt the course format. The more the tutoring is adapted to the client, the more chances of success both teacher and client have.

Finally, I identify the last stage as a global debriefing of the tutoring experience with the client. After that, I believe that the monitoring of his success is crucial.

Availability

I am available online and in person on the time slots indicated from Monday to Friday. On Satudray and Sunday, it is possible that sometimes I could not guarantee the in-person tutoring.

Teaching Place(s)

I can teach almost everywhere as long as this is not too far from my residence (that is less than 20-30 minutes of public transit or walking). In the case the place of teaching is too far, this is not a problem for me to teach online.

I can teach at client’s home or office, at my personal home (on UBC’s campus), in a public space or online.
