Canadian native speaker of English. I lived in Tokyo for 8 years, learning and speaking Japanese in daily life and at school and work.
I have a B.A. in linguistics with a minor in Japanese, an M.A. in linguistics, and a B.Ed. I have studied English and Japanese in much depth, both as a language learner and as a linguist. I am very aware of the differences between the languages and some common mistakes/misunderstandings people have when learning them.
I have 7 years of experience as a Japanese-English translator, as well as several years' experience as a tutor of English and other subjects. I have worked with learners from as young as 8 years old to seniors.
In one-on-one settings, my first concern is getting a feel for the level of the language learner. Thereafter, I try to engage the student in using language to express themselves and talk about areas or topics that interest them. I am open to using any textbooks or online resources as aids, but not as the pillars of learning.
Weekday evenings
Currently online only. Some time in the future, also locally in Ottawa - at client's home, public setting (e.g. cafe), or even outside at a park if the weather is nice.
