I'm Yumiko :) I was born and raised in Japan, and I've lived on Vancouver Island for nearly 15 years. I love learning about languages and cultures, my own and others'. I currently practice the traditional tea ceremony to understand the beautiful Japanese culture. I specialize in adult language learning through my degree in Applied Linguistics. Combined with the wealth of experience I have in teaching, behavioural coaching, and digital learning, I will be there every step of the way to assist you reach your language learning goal!

It really depends on how you'd like to learn and what you'd like to accomplish, but I generally don't prefer to teach in a traditional teaching method (memorizing vocabulary, working on drills, me doing the talking for 90% of the time etc)
I will adapt to your preference and your goals. If you are a visual learner, we'll try that. If you prefer reading, we can do that too. It'll be something we will discuss together.
We will talk about your goals through our tutoring sessions and set clear, achievable, and trackable goals so that you can definitely reach your goals!

Yumiko is a phenomenal tutor! She’s so knowledgeable, kind, and encouraging. She explains grammar concepts clearly, and you can see how her background in linguistics really makes a difference here. She also provides good examples to solidify new vocabulary and grammar points. She pitches her lessons and conversations to your level and is very adept at asking questions to keep you speaking in Japanese. Her lessons are also fun! Yumiko is a wonderful teacher. I booked some conversation Classes with her and she really helped me to be more confident. She asks a lot of good open-ended questions to keep conversations going and she is a patient, knowledgeable, and fun. I fully recommend her classes
