Super nice and will help sort out what level you’re at learning at and will adapt the lessons to your speed and progress at each lesson. Highly recommend.
During my undergraduate degree at UBC I challenged the Tagalog language proficiency exam. It was part of my BA and I prefered to learn a language I already had roots in rather than French or Spanish. When I first started with Ray, my reading/ writing comprehension was very poor. I only grew up hearing my parents speak to each other and had never practiced it myself, let alone try and read and write it. Any tagalog I did speak or write was very short and not critical or engaging. After about a year with Ray I felt confident enough to challenge the profficiency test. Ray and I had gone over news articles, writing exercises, and conversations that helped me fix my grammar and vocabulary. He esentially plugged the large gaps in my Tagalog in a short amount of time. After taking the test the examiner had let me know that it would be 6 weeks to get the results back to me. Yet 4 days later someone got back to me that I had passed and at an intermediate-fluent level! With other languages that level of proficiency might have taken 4 semesters in university or college. I highly reccomend Ray as a tutor, especially if you're trying to learn tagalog for school, are trying to find the right words to your filipino partner, or are planning on taking a trip to the Philippines. If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out to him! He's responsive and respects your time. You won't go wrong with someone as helpful and attentive as Ray.
