Since September 2024, I have volunteered weekly as an ESL teaching assistant and interpreter at a community language program in Vancouver, providing one-on-one support to adult learners across Mandarin, Japanese, and Spanish language backgrounds. I have experience identifying where a student is stuck, adjusting my explanation style to suit the individual, and delivering concepts clearly across language barriers. My academic background in mathematics and statistics allows me to tutor quantitative subjects up to and including university level, and my native Mandarin makes me well-suited to support Chinese-speaking students navigating English-language academic environments. For English learners specifically, I draw on my ESL teaching experience to focus on conversational confidence, everyday vocabulary, and academic writing depending on what the student needs most.
I start by understanding where the student is — what they already know, where they're getting stuck, and how they prefer to learn. For Mandarin and English language learners, I focus on building real conversational confidence rather than just drilling grammar rules, using everyday scenarios and gradually increasing complexity. For non-native English speakers in particular, I'm familiar with the specific challenges Mandarin, Japanese, and Spanish speakers face in English — so I can anticipate common stumbling blocks before they become frustrating. For mathematics and statistics, I work through problems step by step, making sure the underlying logic is clear rather than just the procedure. I'm patient with students who feel behind and adapt my pace and style to each individual.
Flexible availability — I can adapt to student schedules. Generally available weekday evenings and weekends. Please message me and we can find a time that works.
Available online via Zoom or Google Meet. For in-person sessions, I'm based in Point Grey near UBC and can meet at a local café, library, or the student's preferred location within the UBC/Kitsilano/Point Grey area.
