PhD Student at UBC from Germany. Experienced Teaching Assistant and Instructor with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry.
I have a BA with a major in English/American Linguistics and Literature and a minor in German studies. My Master's degree is in Comparative Literature, and my current PhD Studies is in Media Studies.
I have a long history of tutoring languages to all ages. I instructed German language in both elementary and advanced level at the University of Rochester in NY while studying my Master's at said school. Since 2012, I tutored several classes at German universities and worked as an instructor at a private language school teaching both German and English.
My teaching methods are very flexible and can be adjusted to the student. Whether it is a very relaxed conversation-based form of teaching, or a very lecture/text books type of study, all can be done according to one's wishes.
Most of the time I can adapt to the students schedule. Generally speaking, I am available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays after 5, and Thursdays. Sometimes weekends are available, too. In other words: to be discussed.
Due to COVID-19, all sessions will be held online via Skype/Zoom/Google Meets.
Once the pandemic is over, the following will be the case:
I can offer to tutor at my place (close to Burrard and Davie), or at the student's place. I don't have a car, so it should either be accessible by bus, or walking distance. Preferably around West End. If the travel exceeds 30 min with the Bus, I will have to charge a 25 dollar travel fee for each drive (for example, if you want to meet in Richmond). I can offer to meet on the UBC Campus (if one is a student there, for example). Otherwise public spaces such as coffee shops are welcome, as well.
had 3 sessions with Gerrit where I needed help on a German reading course. Gerrit had not tutored for such a course before but adapted very quickly. I found the process of working through tricky grammatical puzzles with Gerrit very useful with Gerrit always generous and quick with sharing alternative resources or explanations of issues at hand when the textbook failed to be illuminating. Would definitely recommend Gerrit to any student seeking help with a German class.
Gerrit is a great tutor & definitely helped me move forward with my German language goals. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to improve their German!
Only had 1 in person session and 1 web session with Gerrit but he was helpful and a nice guy. Definitely helped with my German.
