Teaching Approach

Basically I have dedicated to the study of the contemporary Hispano-American poetry from a transatlantic perspective. In particular, I pay special attention to the work of César Vallejo; and my thesis of PhD in Boston University, “Poetic and utopias in the poetry of César Vallejo” (2003), was published in Peru and Mexico (2004). The main target of this study was to rescue the understanding of the poetry of Vallejo from only certain typical readings –in its majority politically monitored or one-dimensional ones– and to rather propose a simultaneous, dynamic and plural reading that had like axis its heterodoxies in front of Darwin, Marx, Freud, Christ and, also the own Andean culture of the author of Trilce. Nevertheless, in my present perspective of the study of the poetry of César Vallejo, Vallejo sin fronteras (2010), I much more emphasize Latin American or Peruvian perspectives.

I have been dedicated for many years also –and in different types of institutions and countries (the USA, Mexico, Dominican Republic, etc.)— to tutoring of workshops of literary creation. Recently I have been able to synthesize the theoretical and methodologic profile of this work in an ponency very visited in my blog and titled “The humanities in the workshops of literary creation” where I emphasize the present importance of these and the still greater gravitation than they could have in the university life. My classes always adopt the format of a workshop: to put in common what we do not know more than already enshrined by the critic.

I conceive my blog like a file of several topics of literature that constantly actualize, but also, recent book reviews. In this way, I also visualize that one, since their subjects are predominantly about poetry like a permanent online course; it is worth to say, a way to arrive at the space of my vocation that extends a specific country and is, rather, of some way the Hispanic world in general.

Finally, I am not philologist, structuralist or culturalist (post colonialist) a priori. Everything depends of what I want to do with the literature texts; in this sense I believe and I defend an open mind and inventive approach on the literary critic, because it is in close connection with my educational perspective.
