My name is Alex, and I was born and raised in China. I am a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese and a fluent(almost native) speaker of English. I have stayed in Canada for nearly 7 years. I’m currently a final year applied linguistics student at the University of Victoria, and I specialized in ESL English teaching. When come to teach English I can be both approachable and patient to my students. I have been experienced to learn an additional language for many years, and I would love sharing my learning techniques and outcomes with you.
Even though I am not a TESOL certified teacher yet, I have experience and feel comfortable to teach international students who want to polish or master his/her English skills. Since I’m a final year applied linguistics student so I will get my TESOL certificate soon.
I have been volunteering English at the language center where is located at the University of Victoria for almost three years. During work time I usually help students to explain grammatical rules, proofread students' essay, point out pronunciation errors, and help students to improve communicative English. I currently tutor a middle school Chinese student who has been stayed in Victoria for not very long.
My major is in applied linguistics so I can use suitable pedagogical methods to my future students according to their own needs. My specialties are explaining grammatical rules, and guiding students to write essays. I can also teach and correct students’ pronunciation. I am a bilingual so I can teach both English and Mandarin Chinese.
Mostly I will be available during the weekend; however the time is negotiable which means I can also meet up with students during the week if I’m free
I’m very flexible, so I can either meet up with students at UVic, coffee shop, my place, student place or any place works for both of us.
I would highly recommend Alex to other students wanting to learn Mandarin or English. Alex is enthusiastic, friendly, talented and reliable. With a passion for teaching, Alex is good with both children and adults alike.
